Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com
Sometimes, half an inch makes all the difference. But that's not the only reason to step up to the 735. Its powerful 10,000 rpm motor will handle anything you feed it--oak, walnut, exotics--with absolute ease. The three-knife cutterhead will make 96 or 179 cuts per inch, depending on which speed setting you choose. Mess is minimized with the fan-assisted chip ejection, which literally vacuums chips off the cutter-head and blows them out the exhaust. The 735's automatic carriage lock will save you from snipe by reducing the movement that causes it--what a great idea. We also love the redesigned thickness scale--it's big and super-visible, even in poor lighting. Those who do repetitive cuts will appreciate the turret depth-stop; set your most-used cuts to it once and you're always assured of accuracy. The home woodworker will be thrilled, and the professional's expectations will be more than met. This is a winner.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste

Amazon.com Product Description
DEWALT's 13-Inch Bench-Top Planer is a powerful machine that employs a three-knife cutter-head and 15.0 Amp motor that runs at up to 20,000 RPM for efficiently handling wide pieces of material and deep cuts. The 19 3/4-inch base is made of durable cast aluminum and the fan-assisted chip ejection system vacuums debris away from the cutting. Other features include an automatic carriage lock that reduces movement, an extra-large turret depth stop for finding frequently used thicknesses, and a two-speed gear box for easily changing feed-speeds. This heavy-duty planar has a maximum width capacity of 13 inches and a depth capacity of six inches with a 1/8-inch maximum depth of cut.

5 out of 5 stars No problems - worked right out of box   January 1, 2009
Before I purchased this machine I read the reviews on it here, and several other sites including Dewalt. There seemed to be about an even split on positive and negative reviews. Frankly, I am not used to seeing as many negative reviews, and about things I was concerned with I.E.
Snipe, ease of use, and ease of adjustments to be specific.

However, in the end I bought the DW735. Primarily because of the 90 day return policy from Dewalt.

Once I got the machine home I was anxious to see (good or bad) just what I had gotten myself into. First it was heavy to get out of the box and unto the table I had for it, but not much different than other planers I considered. I read weight is a good thing for a planer

Second, I immediatly planed a 2X4 to see how good it worked. I didnt check any adjustments. My first effort had snipe at both ends. I tried again and had very little snipe. I have now planned a good bit of short and long stock with amazingly great results. I have had occassional snipe when I fed the stock in at an angle. All of my work has been without the infeed/outfeed tables. I have only used the finish setting, never used the deminsion setting.

I can now truly say this thing is a dream to use right out of the box.

By the way, I did order the infeed/outfeed tables from Grizzley (best price) and couldn"t beleive how easy they were to install (did this this morning). From what I read in reviews this alone was going to be a test of engineering skills which I don't have. I think they will help keep the stock level with the cutters.

I think Dewalt should include them with the original purchase - you pay enough for the 735.

1 out of 5 stars A bad mistake   December 12, 2008
I purchased a DW735 new in Feb 2008 based on the reviews I read and comparing it to what I thought were comparable machines. The motor failed on it after a few uses never taking more than 1/32 as a maximum cut. When I contacted DeWalt and told them that the machine started blowing circuit breakers for no reason they told me to try a different wall receptacle and suggested I change blades. When I told them new blades would not do me any good if the motor won't turn on they referred me to their service center. The machine was taken to the service center and I left with not very much good information. The motor seems to be the weak link here. The service center had two other DW735 machines that had been left by their owners (as potential parts machines) because the original owners didn't even want them, one had been sent to DeWalt 3 times and was again down for the count. I am now looking for a planer that will do what I thought this one would do - last me through my retirement years of wood working. What a disappointment to find out that my fixed income will have to either find additional shop tool funds or I will not have the liberty of having a planer in my shop for working with wood.

4 out of 5 stars Great planer   November 27, 2008

For the price, I expected this planer to walk on water. It comes pretty close. The biggest problem with these little guys is snipe. This design vertually eliminates the problem. Snipe is visible on some softer woods, but it is not serious. I compare this to a huge industrial planer where I buy furniture wood, and a Delta TP 305 which was terrible in this regard. I wore the TP305 tool out in about 30 hours of use. (It stopped cutting parallel to the bed.) I successfully rigged 4" dust collection on the Dewalt. Serious dust collection is a requirement on planers. They produce hazardous levels of dust and shavings. Be sure to buy the bed extension plates. Those are required to reduce snipe. Makes in- and out feed more manageable too. Durability seems good so far. Great tool.

4 out of 5 stars good buy   November 11, 2008
It is a pretty good planer, very solid. The only reason I'm writing this review is because I find it interesting that I bought this for about $425 almost 2 years ago. Skip investing in the stock market, I might just buy a truck-load of planers =)

1 out of 5 stars Disapointed and now my back hurts   November 1, 2008

I went to lowes after much anguish as to which planer to buy. I bought the dw735 at $549 brand new in the box factory sealed btw. Well I got the beast home by myself, down the steps, mounted onto my workbench. I also went out the next day and got some hose fittings so I could attach my vac if I wanted to. Well after all that I went to power it up for the first time this morning so I could plane the boards I have, and...... utter disapointment. The unit did not even power on. The manual said to check the power cord, dust port, and top cover. All seemed fine, even the outlet was working fine with other items. So needless to say, less than 1/2 hour of my first attempt to use the thing, it has been returned to lowes. Now I wish I had not bothered with this unit and had gone with something else instead.
