4 out of 5 stars good, inexpensive filter   January 8, 2009
I've had mine for a couple of months and haven't had the problems with cracking yet that others have described. I like that only the internal filter needs to be replaced, not the whole housing like the Brita. My previous Brita filter did develop leaks and cracks as described here. I think that when this filter dies though, I'll go with a countertop model - the filters last much longer, about a year or so, and I think in the long run it will be a better investment.

1 out of 5 stars Filter maybe OK, but the enclosure (housing) is rubbish   January 8, 2009

I bought this unit (chrome color) in 2005 to provide drinking water for my family. I have not much to say about the filtration capability, but the water tastes good (fine) with it. But the filter life is short for the way we use water (read: a lot of water). In this respect, this filter has not been economical for us.

But I have much to complain about the housing of the filter. First, the positioning of the filter unit on the faucet top is awkward. It reduces our moving space when washing large pots; and it is often hit by the pots and utensils being washed. Second, the housing is NOT durable. It is all plastic, like many of other reviewers said, and as such it is broken easily. I am surprised how quickly the unit's mechanicals broke down--only in the matter of a few months. I have gone through at least 3 units, and all of them leak here and there, or the flow switch was breaking. The company was kind enough to send me 2 replacements without question asked. After the unit began to leak, the filtered water was mixed with the unfiltered water. What's the point, then? Yes, when I bought it in 2005 it has 5 year warranty (now it is 1 year--you know why)--but I am not going to call them anymore to ask for a new unit. Enough is enough. I am going to switch to another form of filtration.

1 out of 5 stars Easily damaged, always looks dirty   January 4, 2009
This is our second water filter unit in our current home, and our third overall, having installed one in the apartment many years ago. We weren't able to get filters for the last unit we owned (a Brita) anymore so we picked up one of these Pur units in our local supermarket. Boy, what a disappointment. The plastic (don't be fooled, it's all plastic) cracked pretty quickly, so the shiny bottom you see in the picture is gone - fell off. Instead we get to see the ugly black plastic underneath. The filters need to be changed relatively often compared to previous filters we've owned. And since it's all plastic it's almost impossible to keep clean - even the slightest grease, fingerprints, etc. put spots on the outside that only glass cleaner will temporarily remove.

The unit currently works fine if you excuse the hairline leak that sprays a fine mist of water all over the sink, but it's so ugly and annoying we just can't stand looking at it anymore and we're replacing it.

2 out of 5 stars doesn't last   January 3, 2009
Great idea, just not very well made. The first one cracked at the cap, the second one leaked around the faucet where it can't be repaired. Both happened in less than a year. Just doesn't hold up well.

1 out of 5 stars Pur Lies   January 3, 2009
We picked up a Pur faucet filtration system for my home about six months ago. We also bought quite a few filters. They were very expensive (why does plastic and carbon cost so much?), but we figured that good water was worth it - particularly since we have a little boy.

Our water is city water. It's not bad, but we thought it wouldn't hurt to be a little extra safe. It's just too bad we went with Pur.

The filters are supposed to last for two months or 100 gallons. So far, only one out of TEN filters has actually lasted that long. The rest have died within one to three WEEKS. The water stream quickly became very weak, ending up as mere drops. We were always careful to follow instructions, never ran hot or warm water through the tap...still, no matter what we did the filters died in practically no time at all.

We contacted Pur, and they claimed that our water must be incredibly bad. We don't believe that this is the case. We get city water, and it's analyzed on a regular basis; it's not particularly hard or soft, and nobody we know has ever had any problem with it. We used other filters in the past, and never had this problem. And it's not as if we got a bad batch of filters; we've bought filters from several different stores over a period of months, and they've almost all been awful. Approximately $10 per filter is a decent price if they work as indicated, but when they only last 1/8 as long as claimed, they become a rip-off.

Once we use up our final filter, we'll be looking for a new filtration system. I'll never buy from Pur again.
